Project Spotlight – Grangemouth Sustainable Manufacturing Campus (GSMC)

The Grangemouth Sustainable Manufacturing Campus (GSMC) is a flagship initiative within the Falkirk & Grangemouth Growth Deal. GSMC will support the UK’s ambition to translate world‑class innovation into commercial, investable industry. Located within Scotland’s largest manufacturing cluster, GSMC will play a national role in delivering the UK Industrial Strategy’s priorities on advanced manufacturing, clean growth, and frontier technologies, such as engineering biology.

The UK has strong capabilities in research and early‑stage innovation, but many technologies struggle to scale, attract private investment, or remain anchored in the UK. GSMC will provide shared, near‑commercial manufacturing infrastructure, enabling companies to test, prove and scale new bio‑based and low‑carbon processes under real industrial conditions, which is a critical step for investment readiness and market adoption to accelerate commercialisation.

By reducing cost, risk and time to market, GSMC will support innovative businesses to start, scale, and stay in the UK, aligning closely with Innovate UK’s mission to industrialise breakthrough ideas and close the scale‑up gap. The campus will enable extended trials, process optimisation and validation at a scale required by investors and customers, bridging the gap between laboratory success and full commercial deployment.

GSMC will serve as the anchor of a broader Grangemouth innovation ecosystem, linking established industry, SMEs, universities, Catapults and skills and innovation partners into a coordinated, place-based network. This ecosystem approach will strengthen supply chains, attract inward investment, contribute to job creation, and support the transition of existing industrial assets and skills towards sustainable, high‑value manufacturing. GSMC will contribute to the long-term economic resilience of Grangemouth.

Through GSMC, Grangemouth is positioned to become a national platform for scaling engineering biology and sustainable chemicals, supporting productivity, resilience and a just transition in line with UK Industrial Strategy and Department for Science Innovation and Technology (DSIT) priorities.

Policy Alignment: Invest 2035

GSMC aligns with Invest 2035, the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy, which identifies engineering biology as a critical frontier technology for growth, productivity, and net zero. The campus is being developed to address a national scale‑up gap by providing shared, near‑commercial manufacturing infrastructure, supporting Innovate UK and DSIT priorities to help innovative businesses start, scale, and stay in the UK through place‑based industrial clusters.
